Hey everyone,

I just thought I'd put together a quick tutorial on how to protect yourself against music and film companies spying on you whilst you're downloading any content Very Happy

I'm by no means an IT expert, but I've recently set this up for myself so I thought I'd share.

I currently use BitTorrent 6.3 to download stuff, but this process is more or less the same for all clients.

I'm not going to go into any huge detail on why you need to do this stuff, needless to say by doing this you create a better connection for your torrent client, which optimizes its performance making downloads faster.

Note: This process can also be used to reduce lag and improve your connection in XBOX Live

Setting up a Static IP address

Spoiler:

Setting up Port Forwarding

Spoiler:

What is PeerBlock?

Spoiler:

Now you should experience faster speeds when downloading files whilst feeling assured that you're conducting your business in private Very Happy

Just remember to turn PeerBlock on whenever you're using your BitTorrent client.

Questions?

Thanks calvin, i was trying a few of these things already but wasn't sure if i was still "safe".

But im not Super hard core torenter like i was because you have to watch what you download and that it is safe. (be it companies watching, Viruses, male ware, etc...)

still its always nice to rid the feeling that some one is watching you.

fantastic post!! its something everyone needs to be aware of and put into practice.

also.. as regards to information, we are in a "free information act" period it works both ways for public and private use. they can search our computers if need be.. so.. best be prepared

a simple way to confuse them is simply to have another directory, everything on our computer is "time, date, stamped"... by moving it from your download directory, and changing the name ie: axxo.. fxg.. skidrow, vitality,

to a different one.. there is no way they can tell if you actually do own the real copy. Smile

Thanks guys.

I thought I'd put this together because it's becoming a big issue.

In France they've recently introduced a three-strikes and you're out system, whereby if they catch you downloading illegal content 3 times then you're banned from using the internet ... for life!

How they can implement such a scheme is beyond me.

The point is, the Music and Film industry are putting billions of dollars into funding anti-piracy infrastructures designed to catch whoever they can and make examples out of them, I just don't want anyone on here to be a victim of that.

A lot of ISP rarely care about Torrenting. The thing is though that it's the media companies that find out and issue out the C&D letters. ISPs are more of the middle-man and hardly even care unless the media companies are crawling up their asses. I've yet to receive one after 5-6 years of popular downloads.
Read somewhere that most judges dont even bother to charge you if you're ever actually taken into court. Don't remember exactly why though.
