I was in the middle of writing a reply to Pete on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System thread when I (as I often do) started to go on a bit.

It got me thinking about next-gen consoles and what we can expect to see. Some think it's likely that Microsoft will show a concept of their next console at this year's E3, so I want to know your thoughts and opinions.

I've played a few games on my xbox 360: Fallout 3, Oblivion, Bioshock, GTA IV, Fable 2 but I actually use it more as a media library. I usually watch all my download shows and movies on it because it has the ability to upscale the quality of the content and I get to watch it on my 32" HDTV instead of my 10.2" netbook screen or 17" desktop monitor.

I think we'll see next-gen consoles taking that concept even further, becoming "all-inclusive entertainment centres". Some would argue we're already there but I'd say this is more of a trial run rather than the end product.

The catalyst for this is that people's concept of property has shifted slightly. I think we're all edging towards a world where we won't own physical copies of our media; CDs, DVDs and Games but instead have them stored on the cloud (on the internet) available for us to download repeatedly if anything should happen to the hardware it was running on.

Do people even want to "own" a movie these days? The internet has made it fairly easy to watch any movie you like whenever you like. With services like Netflix in the US and LoveFilm in the UK (companies that specialise in online movie rentals) it seems like we're spoilt for choice.

Taking the idea of online content even further still, we have youTube of course, podcasts, internet radio and various other online media creators and distributors - if the next-gen console can act as a way to bring all these aspects together much like the Boxee does at the minute then we'll be one step closer to having a device that does it all.

I could go on and on but I shall leave it there lol, congratulations if you read through all that haha - now for your thoughts - what kind of thing would you like to see in the next-gen consoles?

That's a good point actually. The Wii and DS are aimed towards a broader audience, which means you get a lot of gimmicky games to tie in with the flailing around of arms or scribbling on screen which ultimately reflects in the standard of game being produced.

Project Natal seems to be a more integrated system, in the way that you can interact with the menus by sliding a hand across as if you're sifting through them and voice recognition.

If done right it'll feel natural and the games produced will use it to it's benefit but if it's done wrong we'll see more and more games being made just for the sake of waving your hands about and looking like an idiot.

A good analogy would be 3D movies - they can easily feel gimmicky if you have things shooting out towards you or making it look like the person infront of you is wearing a hat or something - a great 3D experience should immerse you into the fictional world.

If game maker's can do that then we're onto a winner.

Great topic. and you "Cloud" idea is on its way...

there is a system in the making called "Onlive", it uses a small device that communicates to servers that house games.

ALL THOUGH, this is relay cool, it seems they are behind on their release date by a few months. Which has people thinking that they will not come out with it.

Yeah I've heard about this, streaming games over the internet - it's an exciting concept - I just hope it doesn't stay as a concept.

He explained that it's cheaper than anything out there at the minute, it'll be interesting to see how cheap - if it takes off you might get ISPs complaining about bandwidth hogs or designing expensive packages offering access to this service.

So I'm thinking it'll be around £30 - £50 to buy the onlive unit then the usual cost for games.

Thanks for this video, I watched it over my morning coffee lol

What I would really love to see in a next gen console is a bottle opener, no system has ever had one and it makes it less stressful on your teeth so you don't pop them bottles open with them. I'm not a gamer but my five year old son is on his way to becoming one. With minimal help he has beaten most levels on Legos Star Wars:The Complete Saga on the Wii and We play Legos Batman on XBOX 360 and he's not that bad. We can't really play any other games because most of them require that you can read and he's only in kindergarten so his reading skills aren"t the best. But I have Fable 2, Bioshock, Civilization Revolution on the 360, Guitar Hero World Tour, and a bunch of Gamecube games on the Wii. As he learns to read his gaming skills will improve and though I suck at playing video games I love to watch them being played. So just ask those console designers to put a bottle opener in the right corner of the next system for me.

@petey - you still open bottles with metal caps by using your teeth!? hah!

I can't wait for the PS4...have you seen the controller ~ HAA! jokes

Next-gen consoles Ps4con10

Seriously, looking into the crystal ball we can expect smaller form
factors for the consoles (my have they started to shrink)
and a lot more "touch" handhelds.

also we can look forward to various wireless controllers...
expect face recognition, head tracking and motion sensing
without anything held in our hands!

and to access the downloadable content remotely
may no longer require an account to access
just cost to download games, music, pictures, and movies...

online gaming and internet browsing will remain features to be
expected more than paid additional for.

what I would like see?

I'm am hoping that VR (virtual reality) projectors with
holographic displays will find their way into commercial gaming
at the home. maybe a force feed back suit?
Obviously some technology won't make it due to cost and demand.
Also some Arcades need to have a purpose in why people should
visit to play versus staying at home due to the Killer Console...
which becomes more killer through time.
Other than the main three choices Wii, X360, PS3...
there's very few competitors offering cheaper knock off versions...

One of my dreams is to make a console buzz worthy
enough to have one of those companies sweat the new
competition... I know I'm such a dreamer...
but I've been working on this project off and on...
it's called PLAYBOOK and is not considered a Cabinet like A.C.E.
in time I will share more info on this but it's nothing to get
excited over... not like the Next Generation of Gaming Technology.

oh and since we are talking future...
moving this to HAKKEN HYTEK ^,^
