With the new update of Minecraft 1.3, you can now set up a LAN server. Now, most might mistake the meaning of LAN and say "But don't you need to be connected to their router, like at their house?" This is one case but there is also another case.

How to set up a Minecraft LAN server:

Start a Single-Player game and go to the Menu.
Head to the "Open to LAN" button

You can switch how other players can play by changing the Game Mode and Cheats options, however the Game Mode won't apply for you.

Click on "Start LAN World"

You will get the message "Local Game hosted on: "Your Dynamic IP":"Port Number"

Head over to Whatismyip.com and get your computers IP address.

Have whoever you want to connect to go to the Multiplayer screen and have them go to Direct Connect.

Have them type in your IP found on Whatismyip.com and then :"Port number of your game".

The IP they type in should look like xx.xxx.xx.xxx:xxxxx , Where the first set of numbers is your Computer's IP address and the :xxxxx being the Port.

Finally have them press "Join Server"

How come?

This is how me and my friend from another state do it and it's worked at least 3 times so far.

This isnt an actual Server tutorial, just LAN. I dont know the minimum LAN server settings such as the max people but its nice for playing with a small group of friends instead of having to Port Forward for an actual server.

But if theres any problems I can help.

1. 99% of the general public do not know what a static IP is and do not have one, most of us have a dynamic ip,
also this ip is external so you have to pass the connection through your router, (via port forwarding the connection to the host computer) also I'm not sure if minecraft adds incoming / outgoing rules to your nat?

This post might be irrelevant if the Minecraft host acts as a vpn,
Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I see this as the only possible way this would work

No offence intended

I don't mean any offence either if I typed it that way.

When you press the "Start LAN world" it shows the message of your Static IP, which in my case is shown as xxx.xxx.x.x:xxxxx. You don't need to know your Static IP, it displays it for you, then the Port number needed to connect.
(I could also be mistaking the Static IP for Dynamic IP so if this is one problem then just assume I mean Dynamic)

The Dynamic IP (Now just going to say this as I am pretty sure it is this now, was confused at first) will act as your Host server (Router). By people connecting through your computer's IP, this allows a like-connection as if it were LAN. If you connect using the Dynamic IP shown at first compared to the computer's personal IP , you will get a time out.

This could be a VPN by the looks of it however I don't have any knowledge of actual VPN's.

If you have any experience with VoIP service Server Hosting like Ventrilo or Teamspeak, this is the pretty much the exact thing.

With the entire Port Forwarding thing, I'm not too sure on why it's not needed. But the three times I have hosted my own LAN, I got different Port numbers and I just tested it again to make sure.
One time I got 59873 and the next time I got 58800.

I hope this helps clear up anything. I don't know the exact specifics on how Minecraft has it set up but I just know it's worked for me this way.

Hey M,
this information clears things up, while it's impossible for anyone to directly connect to an internal computers port from outside the realm of your router without p-forwarding. Minecraft.net clearly has a vpn system in which these connections can be made, Very Happy.
A static ip is normally used when hosting a web domain, you have to pay your isp extra money to get one of these Sad .

From this point you engage in the services of a dns provider to have a domain routed to this ip

eg when people type "www.example.com" --> this goes to the dns server which in turn routes the browser / client to --> 206.786.1.1:80 port 80 being the default http port Razz

dynamic ip's change every now and again and this messes up the dns server as the ip it was going to route to is no longer active.

every computer in your network will have this external ip so when port forwarding your router routes the connection to the host computer through the port which has been forwarded.Very Happy

if anyone would like me to post a tut about how to host a full bukkit server and how to port forward/setup dynamic dns

(-turn's this)

"hey wanna join my server,"
"sure whats the adrress?,"
"309.393.0.0,"
"WHAT the $!$@!"

into

"hey wanna join my server,"
"sure whats the adrress?,"
"myserver.dyndns"
"i got in, YAY!!!!"

I would be happy to help

Glad it did help. I thought I messed up by saying Dynamic at first so I changed it to Static but I'll change it back to Dynamic.

I just did a FFA PVP on Minecraft with 3 of my friends however my friend couldn't host on his computer. What do you think might be the problem here? I told him the directions as stated in the OP but it just timeouts.

Yeah that could possibly be it. I'll try to have him check his firewall settings.

Sure, go ahead and post it. Very Happy
