Gaming companies are now taking advantage of using P2P connections, which uses a person to "share" another persons files to make the download go faster.
But is it really going faster?
Steam uses P2P, LeagueofLegends uses P2P, WoW patcher, SC2 patcher, HoN, and many more use the Peer to Peer connections. Usually there is an option to turn it off. If you are downloading a big patch, try turning P2P off. And it will go faster.

I was downloading the SC2 digital installer and it said "6 hours remaining" on a P2P connection. I turned it off in the options and it said "2 hours remaining". League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth use Pando Media Booster, which automatically installs to your computer.
On Steam, I believe if you change your internet settings to Fiber then it will turn off the P2P.

perhaps it was taking advantage of your fast speed and giving it to other users?

I just recently had an idea for youtube to do some kinda P2P when buffering videos, so more popular videos would buffer quicker because speeds would be based on others that are buffering.

That would be a good idea Wiggles, but still, if you have a limited download rate then it'd still be slower than non-P2P.
If you run dailup (which I did) you can probably only max up to 30Kbps and plus it does a roller coaster thing and goes up and down. It'd be slow. Plus I think Youtube would have to go through a software process of us downloading something to do it because where else are we going to store the video information we downloaded to give to others? Either way, it'd slow our computers, as that'd clog up a lot of space per video.
