Not sure if this deserves to go into the science section, but just calling for a bit of a discussion.
I occasionally experience sleep paralysis. This is a state that occurs just before or just after entering sleep (REM I think...). If it is before, you're still awake when your system goes into sleep mode, and if it's after, you're awake before you uh...wake up..?
The chances of you experiencing sleep paralysis can be affected by an irregular sleep pattern, insomnia, sleep deprivation (my excuse) and some other stuff. Also, sleeping in supine position (opposite of prone) is another factor.
I basically experience sleep paralysis after sleep. I'll just describe it for this morning's event.
I wake up at around 5am and I'm lying on my belly. My chin is raised on the pillow. It's still pretty dark but there's some sunlight coming through the window. I'm finding it kinda hard to breathe considering my nose is blocked and my face is embedded into my pillow. I try to roll over, but I have an inability to do so. I figure I'm too tired to. I lay there for a bit, losing oxygen and then I decide that I probably should start getting some air. I try to move my arm from my side to push my face away, but it fails to respond. The feeling is strange. I can feel my arm as normal (unlike when you loose blood to a limb and it becomes a bag of meat), but I can't move it. I'm losing oxygen. I kinda think about moving anything and I'm paralysed. I panic for about 5 seconds before the paralysis breaks and I roll over. This entire event took place over about 15~20 seconds.
Anyone else experience similar?

I think I've had sleep paralysis once or twice when I was trying to do Lucid Dreaming. I think I found an easy way to Lucid Dream though:
1. Try to sleep like normal (I usually do it on my side) and try not to move through the entire time
2. Try to breathe in and out with your nose and with your eyes closed until you start to breathe at the same intervals and soon you'll be asleep but you won't feel asleep.
When you do this, you'll be "thinking" while your body is asleep. It really doesn't feel like you are sleeping just thinking and picturing and might make you more tired when you wake up. Sometimes you might find gaps of your thoughts and I believe this is when you know you are Lucid Dreaming. I have probably only done this three times this summer but this method helps me sleep also even though most of the time I dont Lucid Dream.

I think I might have experienced something like that. Sometimes I'm awake but then I have this huge jolt that shakes the bed and then I wake up...again. Maybe that's just me falling asleep and not making it...
It usually takes me ages to fall asleep so I'll try out that thing

Nah. I do that sometimes too. Mostly in school. No idea what causes it but it makes me look dumb.

@blue - what about your amount of exercise? Being young, you need to burn off the energy, and by the end of the day you will be so exhausted that when you go to sleep, you are asleep. Then when you wake, you are awake.
It kind of sounds like you are 1/2 awake and 1/2 asleep, conscience yet can't move... head is awake, body still sleeping because you have new batteries that are fully charged. +

I dont do much exercise; I do ride to school every day though. Also, my laptop broke recently so I'm going to have a tonne of time to play bball or whatever.[
