Why is it with most movies do now a days people ruin a good things with either a prequel or a sequel. when they decided to make prequels about the "holy trinity" Star Wars. (I am a fan-atic of the original trilogy. I do love the prequels but they will never live up to the original trilogy in my eyes) Maybe its like my friend says, "its a story that needed to be told" what are your thoughts. name a good or bad prquel or sequel and why it is so.

@Cheaty - Highlander... is a perfect example.

Highlander was one of my all time favorites!

When a sequel came out I was excited. but when I watch it,
I was disappointed in the quality of acting and direction.
I did like how the story grew and gave more detail to
what "the prize" was all about.

The TV series hung in there for a bit... wasn't that bad
but still nothing could match up to the Original.

There's even an anime version of Highlander which rocks!
Made by the team that made one of the best japanese
animes of all time "Ninja Scroll"

Sequels and remakes are hard to top the originals...
IMO only a few was able to do it for me like
Back to the Future Part 2

maybe it has something to do with changing directors and production crews, story control, change of actors, etc...

but then you have Rambo, Batman, Harry Potter, and other
continuing movies that appear to break the sequel to trilogy
which have gone through all sorts of changes.

Might not be a movie but this game series needs to be re-done

Legend of Legaia

If you don't know what it is check it out on Youtube

Extremely dissapointed by the 2nd one for lots of reasons

Like they didn't keep the feel of the story and the battle engine was ruined...

Or

Brave Fencer Musashi

The second one was just like a giant pile of horse dung sprinkled with good graphics

Simplest answer: Money....
A huge fan base like starwars is a resource waiting to tapped into after all those years. it needed something to get the whole merchandising machine moving again.. hell im sure in another 4 to 5 years.. they'll finally put out the other episodes. 7 8 and 9.. Matrix is another example.. the first one.. snuck out of no where onto the big screen and blew our minds!.. its vision and its story, but the mass media frenzied over it demanded it to be made intro a trilogy having the holy-trinity effect play out. doing so seems to make a series epic or atleast marketable.

but on touching on your other thought petey, nothing is worse than a Remake.. nothing.. lack of originality.. lack of effort. with millions and millions of books out there.. or potential scripts rather. its sad to think they have to try and cash in again. on something that was already successful..

its my main gripe with P-diddy and friends.. the way they sampled and the way Will smith samples is unbelievable. lets not remix it but.. just put our vocals over it. but if the market will bare it..
then.. like lambs to the slaughter..

A great example of franchising to the extreme is the American Pie series.

Not content with producing a trilogy of teen-antics comedy, they have since released 4 straight-to-dvd spin-offs: American Pie presents: Band Camp, The Naked Mile, Beta Camp and The Love Book.

Mainly using unknowns, lousy scripts and made on a low budget. But by tieing in with the original film-franchise they know they can shift a few million dvds or boxsets.

Horror movie franchises are probably the most renowned for doing this, Friday 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street and so on ...

Scream 4 is set to start production in 2010 - thankfully with the original cast.
