Can any American friends here explain why thanksgiving is so important and how your usual thanksgiving runs? Australia is running off American culture anyway so I might as well have a head start.

Hal mart holiday, was based around us discovering America, now its just a day that most people get off work n school, to just chill and eat a bunch of food for a day while bonding with family members.

Def has become more of a marketing holiday,. something to signify that its time to start. hence "black friday" right after. its an american tradition more for shopping tv/sports/ and food. rather than the meeting of the pilgrims and the slaughtering of the native americans.

for me...Thanksgiving has been and always will be that time of year in which family/friends/loved ones get together and is truly thankful for each others company and is celebrated by a feast in which those who bring to the table are just thankful to share with others and those who take from the table are thankful to get their fill and be with good company.
Sure there's a future in marketing and a history of pilgrims and natives...
but for me it has nothing to do with any of that!
other than my sister deciding to be with her man and his family this year :~/
this thanksgiving I was so thankful that my mom and dad, my brothers, and all of the kids in the family are still alive and well, + +
I had beers with my pops
talked church with my moms
watched movies with my older bros (check out The Raid!)
played mortal kombat with my son, nieces and nephews +
we ate lots of food that tasted great! (dad is pro cook)
laughed watching killer karaoke on youtube and some mad tv episodes...
it was lots of positive vibes being with family
I got a lot of photos to upload, I'll get around to it ;-)
well I hope y'all had a g1 ~ I DID! ^,^

From Gameface's description, it sounds like Chinese New Year for me. But like, when I was in Taiwan

To me it sounds like Russian New Year... like any where, Russians tend to bring their culture with them.
